Hog Hollow Country Lodge has kept its place inside a private nature reserve since 1993, close enough to Plettenberg Bay for an easy drive and far enough to forget it exists. Indigenous forest presses close on every side, and the Tsitsikamma Mountains hold the skyline above Matjies River Gorge. Nothing here is built to compete with that scale. It is built to let you stand inside it, and then come back to a fire.
Ours is not a lodge you pass on the way to somewhere else. Askop Road is tarmac the whole way, just 5 minutes off the N2, birdsong and the occasional bushbuck for company, indigenous canopy closing overhead until the lodge appears like a clearing kept just for you.

Suite A and Suite B open onto private viewing decks built for slow mornings and long views. The Family Suite and Interleading Suites gather people who want to be near each other without giving up quiet. The Honeymoon Suite keeps its distance from everything but the fire. Each is dressed with a king-size bed, its own fireplace, and a deck over the valley.

Every evening, guests walk down to the Boma as the light goes copper over the gorge. It is fire-pit dining in the truest sense: communal benches, wood smoke, and dinner that arrives when it is ready, not when a clock says so.

Mornings, the Boma is where the lodge wakes up: coffee poured before check-in, birdsong instead of traffic, plans for the day made over a low flame. By evening the same fire pit becomes the heart of dinner, a shared table under the stars with the forest close enough to hear.

The deck holds its sun loungers above the treeline, the outdoor pool cooled by the same mountain air that moves through the forest below. It is less an amenity than a place to stop moving. Guests have been known to spend an entire afternoon here and call it the best part of the stay.

The mountains here do not need to be tamed. They only need a fire nearby, and someone willing to sit beside it.
Suites are kept limited to keep the reserve quiet. Write to us with your dates and we will hold your place by the fire.
